New Mexico High School Soccer - Valley held off by Manzano
August 31, 2016: Albuquerque, NM 87112 The Manzano Monarchs held off the visiting Valley Vikings soccer squad by a margin of 3-2 in Wednesday's non-league match.
The Monarchs now sport a 2-2 record. They play next when they host Sandia for a non-league match on Friday, September 2. Manzano will encounter a Matadors squad coming off a 5-0 non-league win over Atrisco Heritage Academy (Albuquerque, NM). The Matadors record now stands at 2-2.
With the loss, Valley drops to 1-3 on the season. The Vikings travel to Atrisco Heritage Academy (Albuquerque, NM) to encounter the Jaguars in a non-league match on Friday, September 2. The Jaguars come into the match with a record of 0-3. Atrisco Heritage Academy lost 5-0 in their recent non-league match against Sandia (Albuquerque, NM)
Game Summary
Almost a mirror image of last year. A slow start for Manzano which Valley took advantage of in the 14th minute, leading 1-0 at half. A quick second goalearly in the second half (42nd minute) pushed Valley to a 2-0 lead. The Manzano team seemed to then step up there game with high pressure from Angelique Valencia forcing a keeper error (touch outside the box). In the 60th minute Kylee Foster capitalized with a perfectly placed free kick to narrow the lead 2-1. Angelique then found the back of the net to even the score 2-2 and push the game into overtime. Valley created some close calls with shots in the 83rd and 84th minutes, but in the 86th minute Adri Hernandez settled a ball in left mid-field and played a perfect through ball to Aubrey Hershberger on the right side, who showed a golden boot burying the ball in the upper left corner ...GOAL!
