California High School Softball - Orange Lutheran gets by Norco
April 5, 2012: Norco, CA 92860 Spectators at Thursday's non-league match between the Orange Lutheran Lancers (Orange, CA) and the host Norco Cougars (Norco, CA), witnessed Orange Lutheran's softball squad tip Norco by a count of 2-1.
The Lancers now sport a 18-3 record. They play next when they travel to Esperanza for a non-league match on Friday, April 6. Orange Lutheran will face a Aztecs squad coming off a 7-5 non-league win over Aliso Niguel (Aliso Viejo, CA). The Aztecs record now stands at 13-5.
With the loss, Norco moves to 14-1 on the season. The Cougars host Poly (Riverside, CA) to face the Bears in a Big VIII match on Wednesday, April 11. The Bears go into the match with a record of 9-6. Poly lost 10-1 in their recent non-league match against Cienega (Vail, AZ)
Game Summary
Orange Lutheran defeated the Norco Cougars by a score of 2-1 in the second round of the Michelle Carew Classic on Thursday afternoon. Jade Vecvanags started in the circle for the Lancers and held the Cougars scoreless for 5 innings. The Lancers scored in the 2nd inning thanks to consecutive base hits by Sam Arents, Noelle Wagner and Bryn Gornick. Entering the top of the 6th with a 1-0 lead, Vecvanags gave up a solo homerun to Norco’s Ashley Goodwin. With the score tied 1-1 and 1 out in the top of the 7th, Vecvanags was relieved by Madison Osias, who got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the inning. With 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd in the bottom of the 7th, Heather Hall had an RBI single to score Jessica Whitney from 2nd base.
Osias got the win for the Lancers, bringing her record to 9-2. Alyssa Taylor, Hall and Wagner each had 2 hits for OLu.
