Colorado High School Basketball - Jefferson Academy over Valley
March 11, 2011: Gilcrest, CO 80623 Fans at Friday's non-league challenge between the Jefferson Academy Jaguars (Broomfield, CO) and the host Valley Vikings (Gilcrest, CO), saw Jefferson Academy's basketball squad knock off Valley by a score of 52-40.
With the victory, Jefferson Academy improves its record to 19-7 on the campaign. The Jaguars travel to Faith Christian (Arvada, CO) to battle the Eagles in a non-league challenge on Saturday, March 12. The Eagles come into the challenge with a record of 25-1. Faith Christian won 48-30 in their recent non-league challenge against Pagosa Springs (Pagosa Springs, CO)
Next up, the Vikings battle the Pagosa Springs Pirates (Pagosa Springs, CO) in a non-league challenge, on Saturday, March 12. Valley will attempt to improve on its 22-5 season record. The Pirates come into the challenge with a 17-6 record after their 48-30 non-league loss to Faith Christian (Arvada, CO).
First Quarter
Final 4 – State Semi-Final – Valley looked poised and in control during 1st quarter action. T. Schmidt hit a mid-court buzzer beater to propel Valley to a 15-7 lead going into quarter #2. Jefferson Academy got scoring from Seniors #30 Jason Propst with 4 points, and #32 Simeon Ukuni’s nice looking elbow jumper #1 Junior Vaughn Ryan scored the only other Jaguar point in the quarter hitting one for two from the charity stripe.
Second Quarter
Quarter #2 was Jaguar defense at its best, holding Valley to a mere 5 points. #4 Senior Julian Schmidt hit two nice pull-up jumpers in traffic. Ukuni hit from downtown for a triple. Propst got a great assist from Schmidt on a screen-n-roll play and also knocked down two from the one point line. Ryan also converted a bucket on a great steal and assist from Ukuni. The score was 20-20 heading into the break.
Third Quarter
Jason Propst put on a show in the 3rd quarter scoring 12. He hit two nice jumpers after gathering offensive glass. Ukuni pulled down a great defensive board and lead Propst for an explanation point dunk mid-way through the quarter. #33 Chase Layton and Schmidt hit all four of their shots from the free throw line as the Jaguars opened up a 36-30 lead.
Fourth Quarter
The 4th quarter was dominated on the glass by Ukuni and Propst. Both seniors finished the game with 11 boards each. Schmidt and Ukuni both went 5 for 6 from the line; Propst hit two free shots and Ryan hit on a driving lay-up. Jefferson Academy will play for the State 3A Final vs. Faith Christian.
