Rhode Island High School Basketball - Narragansett falls to West Warwick
February 21, 2012: West Warwick, RI 02893 The West Warwick Wizards basketball team scored 79 points and held the visiting Narragansett Mariners to 65 in the Wizards league triumph on Tuesday.
The Wizards now sport a 21-2 record.
Second Quarter
Led by John Morrison's 20 first half points, West Warwick jumped out to a 38-31 half-time lead.
The Mariners, which employed a tight 2-3 zone, held the Wizards' big three (Ryan Lawton, Cory Thibault, and Elijah Saintfleur) to just 11 points in the first half.
The Wizards, however, hit seven three pointers in the first half.
Fourth Quarter
Led by the inside play of Ryan Lawton (15 pts.), Cory Thibault (8 pts.), and Elijah Saintfleur (4 pts.), the Wizards shot 14/25 inside the paint and pulled away with a 79-65 victory.
West Warwick (17-1 in league play) finished as Division II champions . In addition, they tied the All-Time record for most league wins in school history. In 1988-89, the Wizards finished with a 17-1 record.
West Warwick (21-2 overall) will now prepare for the upcoming "Open" State Tournament. After calculating their league wins in the RIIL power ranking, the Wizards will be seeded either 2 or 3 in the tournament.
Last year, West Warwick came within three minutes of upsetting Division I power St. Raphael in last year's Elite Eight.
The Wizards were led by Seniors John Morrison (27 pts.), Ryan Lawton (17 pts., 9 reb.'s, & 7 assists), Cory Thibault (9 pts. & 6 reb.'s), and Elijah Saintfleur (10 pts.).
The Mariners were led by Pat Doyle (18 pts.), Pat Degnan (15 pts.), and Zack McKanna (11 pts.)
