Arizona High School Basketball - Arcadia thwarted by Notre Dame Prep
January 26, 2010: Phoenix, AZ 85018 The Arcadia Titans basketball team (Phoenix, AZ), was toppled 53-36 in Tuesday's league contest with the visiting Notre Dame Prep Saints (Scottsdale, AZ)
The Saints now sport a 12-10 record. They put it on the line next when they host Maricopa for a 4A East Sky contest on Friday, January 29. Notre Dame Prep will meet a Rams team coming off a 54-32 league loss to Williams Field (Gilbert, AZ). The Rams record now stands at 15-7.
The Titans (11-14) will now prepare for their contest against Seton Catholic (Chandler, AZ). The Sentinels enter the 4A East Sky contest with a 21-4 record. In their last contest, Seton Catholic ran past Coronado (Scottsdale, AZ), 64-22, in a league contest.
First Quarter
Notre Dame jumped out to a 9 - 3 lead, but Arcadia closed the quarter on an 8 - 4 run to close the gap to 13 - 11 at the end of the first quarter. Three Notre Dame players led a balanced attack with four points each, while six different Lady Titans scored in the quarter.
Second Quarter
Notre Dame rebuilt a six point lead, 23 - 17, with 2:30 left to go in the half, but Arcadia scored the last points of the period and trailed 23 - 20 at halftime. Megan Gillespie had five second-quarter points for Arcadia, while Anna Hughes scored four for Notre Dame.
Third Quarter
Arcadia went on its best scoring run in the third quarter, a 12 - 4 spree which gave the Lady Titans a 32 - 27 lead, their biggest of the game. But it was all downhill from there for Arcadia, as Notre Dame closed on a 9 - 2 run of its own, to lead 36 - 34 at the end of the third period. Gianna Grumbein scored five points in the period for Arcadia, while Sammie Stopler answered with five of her own for the Saints.
Fourth Quarter
Notre Dame dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Arcadia 17 - 2 in the period. In the last 11 minutes of the game, the Saints outscored the Lady Titans 26 - 4, and ended with a 53 - 36 victory. Three Saints scored four points each in the fourth quarter, indicative of scoring balance which saw four players score in double-figures, led by Anna Hughes' game-high 12. For Arcadia, Megan Gillespie scored 11 points to lead the team, Andrea Gomez pulled down nine rebounds, and Diana Musina contributed three steals.
