Softball Recap: Watertown-Mayer Comes Up Short

Watertown-Mayer extended their losing streak to nine on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 0-9 in the process. They lost 14-4 to the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

As for Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, they moved to 5-6 with that victory, which also ended their five-game losing streak. The result was nothing new for the Lakers, who have now won four contests by seven runs or more so far this season.

For Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted's part, Kirsten Heber was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed six innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits. Heber was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. That run marked the first that she has scored this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Anna Smith, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high. Ari Keating was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Watertown-Mayer will challenge Mayo at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, they will square off against New London-Spicer at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
