Basketball Recap: Mellen Comes Up Short

After flying high against Lac Courte Oreilles last Tuesday, Mellen came back down to earth. The Mellen Granite Diggers lost to the Bayfield Trollers on the road by a 85-70 margin on Friday. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Tuesday (69), the Granite Diggers still had to take the loss.

Bayfield was led to victory by Quintin Bresette and Maxwell Gordon. Bresette dropped a double-double with 29 points and 12 assists, while Gordon dropped a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Gordon is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in each of the last 13 games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Richard Bressler, who posted 12 points and five assists.

Mellen's loss dropped their record down to 17-3. As for Bayfield, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-5 record this season.

Looking ahead, Mellen will head out to take on Winter at 7:15 p.m. on Monday. As for Bayfield, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Fond du Lac Ojibwe O at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. One thing working in Bayfield's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last four games.
