Preview: Rio Hondo Bobcats vs. Falfurrias Fightin' Jerseys
After three games on the road, Rio Hondo is heading back home. They will take on The Falfurrias Fightin' Jerseys at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Two weeks ago, Rio Hondo didn't have too much trouble with Santa Gertrudis Academy on the road as they won 20-6.
Among those leading the charge was Ruben Atkinson, who rushed for 35 yards and three touchdowns. Keyan Lopez also helped out with an impressive 94 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, Falfurrias got themselves on the board against Progreso on Friday, but Progreso never followed suit. They took their match at home with ease, bagging a 53-0 win over the Red Ants. The result was nothing new for Falfurrias, who have now won four games by 35 points or more so far this season.
Falfurrias' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Romeo Gutierrez, who rushed for 85 yards and three touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Rene Martinez, who gained 146 total yards and two touchdowns.
Rio Hondo's win was their seventh straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 5-2. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-7 Progreso and 0-7 Hidalgo (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 37% over those games). As for Falfurrias, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
Rio Hondo didn't have too much breathing room in their match against Falfurrias when the teams last played back in October of 2022, but they still walked away with a 28-22 victory. Will Rio Hondo repeat their success, or does Falfurrias have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
