Softball Recap: Portage Victorious

While Portage's victory against Valparaiso wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Indians narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Vikings 10-9. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Indians have posted since April 15, 2024.

Breanna Reed was a standout: she got on base in three of her five plate appearances with four runs. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Savannah Riley, who went 2-for-5 with four RBI.

Portage kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in four consecutive matchups.

Portage is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Valparaiso, they dropped their record down to 5-10 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road.

Portage and Valparaiso could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Indiana Rankings. The Indians will face off against Hanover Central at 5:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (183 vs. 28). Meanwhile, Valparaiso (ranked 175th) will meet New Prairie (ranked 32nd) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
