Game recap: Gillespie High School Football Team defeats Roxana

ROXANA, Ill. - Gillespie (Ill.) captured the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a 18-17 victory over Roxana (Ill.) on Saturday. The Miners took the lead for good when Derek Tiburzi ran for a touchdown.

After nabbing the lead on a touchdown, the Shells went into halftime with a 7-6 lead. The Miners scored the winning points with a Tiburzi touchdown run that came in the fourth quarter.

Despite scoring six points in the third, Gillespie still trailed by five points going into the fourth quarter. But six points in the fourth helped GHS pull out the victory.

With the win the Miners extended their winning streak to seven games. Gillespie defeated Carlinville 36-27 last week.



Gillespie came in allowing an average of 20.5 points per game this season. The defense really stepped up, holding Roxana below its season average of 20.7 points scored per game.

Roxana (1-6) goes up against Staunton in a South Central game matchup next week, while Gillespie (7-0) locks horns with Greenville also in a South Central game.
