Basketball Recap: Jy'aira Washington's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Northeast over Dunedin

If Northeast was riding high fresh off their 52-17 takedown of Hollins last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Northeast Vikings lost 48-28 to the Dunedin Falcons on Wednesday. The Vikings were not able to make up for their defeat to the Falcons from their previous meeting back in December of 2023.

Several Vikings players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jy'Aira Washington, who posted 14 points. That was a full 50% of Northeast's points, marking the sixth time in a row she's scored more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Shiloh Baker, who earned three points and six boards.

Dunedin's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Samayah Barnes led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 13 points and nine steals. That's the most steals Barnes has posted since back in November of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Erionna Henry, who put up ten points along with eight rebounds and seven steals.

Northeast has been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last 11 matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-11 record this season. As for Dunedin, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 6-7.

Northeast didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 54-17 victory against Pasco on the 16th. As for Dunedin, they will challenge St. Petersburg Catholic at 7:30 p.m. on January 22nd.
