Ray is 2-8 against Gregory-Portland since March of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Ray Texans will be playing at home against the Gregory-Portland Wildcats at 12:30 p.m. Ray has given up an average of 10.6 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Ray is headed into Tuesday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fifth straight game on Friday. They came up short against Flour Bluff, falling 12-0.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Gregory-Portland, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Miller with a sharp 13-1 victory on Friday. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by seven runs or more this season.
Madison Mauricio made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. That's the most runs she has posted over her last 12 games.
In other batting news, Elizabeth Keith was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Alyssa Padron, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Gregory-Portland was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .458. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Gregory-Portland's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 12-6. As for Ray, their loss dropped their record down to 4-11.
Tuesday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Ray hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .367. However, it's not like Gregory-Portland struggles in that department as they've averaged .357. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Ray suffered a grim 11-0 defeat to Gregory-Portland in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can Ray avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
