Baseball Recap: Somerset Triumphs

Somerset hadn't done well against Baldwin-Woodville recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Spartans walked away with a 12-7 win over the Blackhawks. With that victory, the Spartans brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.

Somerset got a great performance from Mason Schmidt as he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Schmidt has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kellen Donnelly, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and five RBI. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. Carson Belisle was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs.

The win got Somerset back to even at 6-6. As for Baldwin-Woodville, their defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 5-6.

Coming up, Somerset will square off against Grantsburg at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Baldwin-Woodville, they will face off against Rice Lake at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
