Basketball Recap: Dos Palos Comes Up Short

Dos Palos lost against Coalinga back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Dos Palos Broncos took a blow against the Coalinga Horned Toads, falling 81-51. While losing is never fun, the Broncos can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1261st, while the Horned Toads are ranked 556th).

When it comes to explaining why Dos Palos lost, don't look at Jacquez Jones. Despite the final result, he posted 18 points. The game was Jones' fifth in a row with at least 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Lish, who earned 12 points.

Coalinga was led to victory by Jaden Pena and Damyen Tamayo. Pena dropped a double-double with 26 points and 13 assists, while Tamayo went 10-for-22 on his way to 26 points in addition to seven boards and five steals. What's more, Pena also posted a 63% field goal percentage, which is the highest he's achieved since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Drake Stevens, who scored eight points and five rebounds.

Dos Palos has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four matches, which has put a noticeable dent in their 10-17 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.3 points over those games. As for Coalinga, the win (which was their 16th in a row) raised their record to 22-6.

Dos Palos didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 74-55 defeat against Taft on the 15th. As for Coalinga, they have also already played their next game, a 59-49 victory against Sierra on the 15th.
