One of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the country picked Southern Miss Saturday at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior from
Petal (Miss.) is the
No. 84 recruit in the country overall, according the CBS/MaxPreps recruiting expert Tom Lemming.
Also the state's No. 1 baseball prospect, Lemming said Alford is the No. 1 offensive player from Mississippi.
"He shows superior arm strength, running skills and smarts," Lemming said. "A terrifically instinctive leader, he knows how to win."
Lemming said Alford is the perfect quarterback for a spread offense.
As a senior at Petal, he threw for 2,058 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran for 1,731 yards and 24 more scores.
"He has proven to be one of the South's most exciting players," Lemming said. "He can make every throw and has a great knowledge of the game. He's a leader on and off the field and combines strength, explosive moves, great vision and tremendous instincts."
Alford's college finalist were Ole Miss, LSU and Southern Mississippi.
National Signing Day is Feb. 1 and verbal commits are not binding.
