Softball Recap: Salem Picks Up 13th Consecutive Win

Salem came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with 12 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.1 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Roxana Shells a 17-0 shutout. Considering the Wildcats have won eight contests by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Breanna Thurman made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 14 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Marah Johnson was incredible, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Emma Lipe, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.

Salem was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Roxana only posted a batting average of .062.

Salem's victory was their ninth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-2. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Roxana, they are on a 20-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-18.

Coming up, Salem will take on Richland County at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Roxana, they will face off against Civic Memorial at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The last four games the Eagles have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
