Softball Recap: Florida Christian Takes Down Immaculata-La Salle in a Playoff Battle

It's playoff time, and Florida Christian had no trouble coming through when it counted. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Immaculata-La Salle Royal Lions a 15-0 shutout on Wednesday. Considering the Patriots have won 13 contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Kayla Diaz made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (five). She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Emily Ruiz was a standout: she went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Emma Medina, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with one home run and three RBI.

Florida Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .909. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Florida Christian has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Immaculata-La Salle, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-13 record this season.

Florida Christian will be staying on the road on Thursday to face off against Miami Country Day at 5:00 p.m. The Patriots' pitcher better be ready for this one: the Spartans have averaged an impressive 8.3 runs per game this season. Immaculata-La Salle does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
