Baseball Recap: Avalon Triumphs

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Avalon had no problem doing just that on Thursday. They walked away with a 7-3 victory over the Leverett's Chapel Lions.

John De La Garza spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on four hits and racked up 13 Ks. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Avalon is 3-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 5-8-1 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Shawn McEwen, who went 1-for-3 with four stolen bases and two runs. He has become a key player for Avalon: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 5-8-1 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Levi Olvera, who earned two runs and two stolen bases.

Avalon's win bumped their record up to 8-9-1. As for Leverett's Chapel, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-7-1.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Avalon beat the Lions by a score of 19-2 later that day.
