Basketball Recap: Smithson Valley Sets Scoring Season-High Against Boerne-Champion

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Smithson Valley). They came out on top against the Boerne-Champion Chargers by a score of 78-70 on Friday. The win was all the more spectacular given the Rangers' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 262nd, while the Chargers are ranked 103rd).

Smithson Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Wyatt Clemence led the charge by going 9 of 14 on his way to 24 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance gave Clemence a new career-high in points. Wayne Jurica was another key player, going 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 22 points and six boards.

Smithson Valley was working as a unit and finished the game with 23 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Despite the defeat, Boerne-Champion saw an underclassman step up: freshman Gavin Peck went 9 of 14 from beyond the arc on his way to 33 points. Those 33 points set a new season-high mark for Peck. Another player making a difference was Baeden Burdick, who posted ten points.

Smithson Valley's victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 9-9. As for Boerne-Champion, their loss dropped their record down to 21-6.

Coincidentally, both will both be playing Alamo Heights the next time they take the court. Smithson Valley will head out to face Alamo Heights at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Boerne-Champion will host them at 6:30 p.m. on January 17th.
