Football Recap: Cardinal Mooney's Loss Ends 12-Game Winning Streak at Home

Cardinal Mooney and Cocoa squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Cardinal Mooney had to settle for second. They took a 31-21 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cocoa Tigers. The match marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Cardinal Mooney's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Devin Mignery, who rushed for 81 yards and one touchdown, and also threw for 124 yards and one touchdown. A healthy portion of that aerial production (84 yards to be exact) went to Kymistrii Young, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

Mignery was just one part of a punishing run game: Cardinal Mooney was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 201 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 201 rushing yards in 13 consecutive contests.

Even if they lost, Cardinal Mooney's defensive line still kept up the pressure with eight sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Bryce Fulda and Elijah Golden, who racked up five sacks between them. Golden is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made five or more in the last seven games he's played. Jayden Burnett was another major factor on D, picking up a sack, making nine total tackles (4.0 for loss), and defending three passes.

A big part of Cocoa's victory came down to the chemistry between Brady Hart and his top target Jayvan Boggs. Hart threw for 508 yards and three touchdowns while Boggs picked up 378 receiving yards and three touchdowns. With that strong performance, Hart is now averaging an impressive 315.4 passing yards per game.

Cardinal Mooney's defeat ended a 12-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 12-1. As for Cocoa, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-3.

Cardinal Mooney does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Cocoa, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 38-27 victory against Gadsden County on the 12th.
