Softball Game Preview: Hugoton Eagles vs. Stanton County Trojans

The Hugoton Eagles will square off against the Stanton County Trojans at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hugoton has given up an average of 12.2 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Colby hit Hugoton with a five-run first inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. Hugoton came up short against Colby, falling 13-2. The loss continues a trend for Hugoton in their meetings with Colby: they've now lost six in a row.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Stanton County). Everything went their way against Elkhart on Friday as they made off with a 27-6 victory. Considering the Trojans have won ten contests by more than nine runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Stanton County let Kynzi Fehringer and Summer Kendrick run wild. Fehringer got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs and three RBI, while Kendrick got on base in all five of her plate appearances with four runs and one stolen base. Kendrick is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last nine games she's played. Another player making a difference was Valeria Ortega, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

Stanton County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .467. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .360 or higher in four consecutive matchups.

Stanton County pushed their record up to 13-3 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Hugoton, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-5.

Hugoton beat Stanton County 17-12 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Trojans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
