Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Celina). They put the hurt on the Lima Senior Spartans with a sharp 25-0 win on Saturday. With that victory, the Bulldogs brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.
Brodee Schulte-Arnold made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Celina is 2-1 when Schulte-Arnold posts three or more hits, but 6-9 otherwise.
In other pitching news, Wes Greber looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Nick Steinbrunner, who got on base in five of his six plate appearances with five runs, four RBI, and two doubles. He continues to improve, besting his previous run total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Tanner Wendel, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Celina hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are 3-1 when they post two or more strikeouts.
The win made it two in a row for Celina and bumps their season record up to 8-10. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 19.0 runs over those games. As for Lima Senior, their loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 6-15.
Looking ahead, Celina will welcome Lima Central Catholic at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Lima Senior, they will square off against Start at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Lima Senior's pitchers better be ready for this one: Start has averaged an impressive 8.3 runs per game this season.
