Basketball Recap: Estancia Takes a Loss

After flying high against Raton last Saturday, Estancia came back down to earth. The Estancia Bears took a hard 44-30 fall against the Tucumcari Rattlers on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Rattlers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 47-38 two weeks ago.

When it comes to explaining why Estancia lost, don't look at Jhenna Valencia. Despite the final result, she posted 20 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. Ana Cuevas was another key player, putting up four points and seven steals.

Tucumcari found their leader in sophomore Cambree Benavidez, who went 7-for-14 on her way to 18 points and six boards. Benavidez has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Caylee Benavidez, who had seven points in addition to seven rebounds and three blocks.

Estancia's defeat dropped their record down to 12-11. As for Tucumcari, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-5.

Estancia has already played their next game, a 60-25 victory against Clayton on the 13th. As for Tucumcari, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 52-31 win against Santa Rosa on the 13th.
