Softball Recap: Sussex Central Comes Up Short

Sussex Central had lost four straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 2-5 to make it five. They came up short against the Surry County Cougars, falling 20-6. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cougars this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 16-0 on Tuesday.

As for Surry County, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 5-5. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 11 runs.

For Surry County's part, Whitney Griffin was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Griffin has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with six RBI, two runs, and one triple.

In other batting news, Aimee Frutiger was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with four runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Lexi Creech, who went 2-for-4 with four runs and one RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sussex Central will head out to take on Southampton at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Tigers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Indians have averaged an impressive 8 runs per game this season. As for Surry County, they are taking a road trip to challenge Brunswick at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars are facing the Bulldogs at the right time seeing as the Bulldogs are stuck on a four-game losing streak.
