Softball Game Preview: Boone Grove Wolves vs. Kouts Mustangs & Fillies

Boone Grove has gone a perfect 10-0 against Kouts recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Wolves will square off against the Mustangs & Fillies at 4:30 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Boone Grove will bounce into Friday's game after beating Illiana Christian, who they had gone 0-4 against in their four prior meetings. The Wolves beat the Vikings on Thursday by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 2-1. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Wolves.

Amanda Powell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up eight Ks. Those eight strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.

On the hitting side, Boone Grove saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mercedes Szakacs, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double. That's the most hits Szakacs has posted since back in May of 2024.

Kouts came out on top against North White on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run fourth inning. The Mustangs & Fillies walked away with a 6-1 victory over the Vikings. The win continues a trend for the Mustangs & Fillies in their matchups with the Vikings: they've now won three in a row.

Kouts also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Katelyn Kleckner gave up a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up seven Ks.

At the plate, Cassie Breitzke was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. That double marked the first that she has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Reese Carden, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one run.

Boone Grove's record now sits at 3-7. As for Kouts, their record is now 2-3.

Boone Grove took their victory against Kouts in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 10-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolves since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
