Softball Recap: Shawnee Wins Going Away Against Spencerville

Shawnee had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Spencerville on Monday. The Indians put the hurt on the Bearcats with a sharp 11-1 win. That ten run margin sets a new team best for the Indians this season.

Addie Melson and Riley Rhodes made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Melson kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Rhodes struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. At the plate, Melson went 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Rhodes went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most hits Melson has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Michayla Browning was incredible, going 3-for-5 with five stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Taylor Lichty, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs.

Shawnee kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Shawnee is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-6 record this season. As for Spencerville, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-12 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Shawnee will take on New Bremen at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Indians are facing the Cardinals at the right time seeing as the Cardinals are stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Spencerville, they will challenge Botkins at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
