The Monterey Trail Mustangs will head out on the road to take on the Laguna Creek Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
On Friday, Monterey Trail needed a bit of extra time to put away Cosumnes Oaks. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-8 victory over the Wolfpack. The win was some much needed relief for the Mustangs as it spelled an end to their six-game losing streak.

Maya Ewing made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Those three runs gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Aniyah Whipper was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Aliyah Ewing was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple.
Laguna Creek came out on top against Elk Grove on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run first inning. The Cardinals took their contest against the Thundering Herd 8-4.
Nikiya Jumpingbull spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on seven hits.
At the plate, Laguna Creek let Kate Saxton and Mia Gonzalez run wild. Saxton went 3-for-5 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Aundrea Jackson, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Laguna Creek was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .432. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Elk Grove only posted a batting average of .269.
Monterey Trail's record is now 9-15. As for Laguna Creek, their record now sits at 10-11.
Monterey Trail beat Laguna Creek 6-2 in their previous meeting back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
