Softball Game Preview: Pittsburg Pirates vs. Sulphur Springs Wildcats

Pittsburg is 0-5 against Sulphur Springs since February of 2022 but things could change on Tuesday. The Pittsburg Pirates will be playing in front of their home fans against the Sulphur Springs Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. This will be Pittsburg's first chance to prove their worth in the conference.

Pittsburg fell victim to Mt. Pleasant and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They came up short against the Tigers, falling 6-0. The Pirates just can't catch a break and have now endured three defeats in a row.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Sulphur Springs, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They never let Paris get on the board and left with a 17-0 win on Wednesday. Considering Sulphur Springs has won eight matchups by more than six runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Abbey Goldsmith was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the fewest hits she has allowed over her last five contests. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with three RBI.

In other batting news, Hannah Speed was a standout: she scored three runs while going 2-for-2. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in RBI (three). Emerson Thompson was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI.

Sulphur Springs always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .889. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Pittsburg's loss dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Sulphur Springs, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 14-4.

Pittsburg suffered a grim 11-0 defeat to Sulphur Springs in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Pittsburg avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
