Baseball Recap: Fort Wayne Northrop Comes Up Short

Fort Wayne Northrop extended their losing streak to nine on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 1-15 in the process. They came up short against the Homestead Spartans, falling 11-2. If the Bruins were looking for revenge after losing 7-3 to the Spartans when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Homestead, their record now sits at 13-2. Considering they have won five games by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

For Homestead's part, Mason Gutmann tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. Gutmann has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Shane Bardwell was a standout: he went 1-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Johnnie Ankenbruck also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.

Looking ahead, Fort Wayne Northrop will take on Fort Wayne North Side at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Homestead, they will host Carroll at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
