Basketball Recap: Martinsburg Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Aaliyah Wymer and Addyson Strovel

If Martinsburg was feeling good fresh off their 45-24 takedown of Jefferson last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Martinsburg Bulldogs took a 45-37 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Musselman Applemen on Thursday. The game marked the Bulldogs' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Addyson Strovel and Aaliyah Wymer certainly did their best on Thursday to avoid the loss. Strovel dropped a double-double on 13 points and 15 boards, while Wymer went 5 of 12 en route to 13 points along with six steals and three blocks. Strovel is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last eight games she's played. Another player making a difference was Tianna Sanabria, who posted six points in addition to five boards and five steals.

Even though they lost, Martinsburg smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 18 offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

With the loss, Martinsburg broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 7-3. As for Musselman, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 10-4.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Martinsburg will square off against Jefferson at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The timing isn't great for Jefferson: they have been struggling with three straight losses at home, while Martinsburg has snatched up ten consecutive wins on the road dating back to last season. As for Musselman, they will face off against Hedgesville at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Musselman is facing Hedgesville at the right time seeing as Hedgesville is stuck on a nine-game losing streak.
