Penney freshman Lindsay Vollmer out-duels Crystal City junior Precious Selmon in two of three events at state track and field meet, leads Hornets to Class 2 girls track and field championship.

Just before Saturday’s Class 2 girls 100-meter hurdle finals, Lindsay Vollmer found herself questioning her abilities. Then she started to reassure herself. When the gun sounded, Vollmer rid herself of the butterflies and ran a personal best 14.61 seconds in the event.
Crystal City’s Precious Selmon, who broke the events record in the prelims with a time of 14.12, was a few steps faster, however, and won the event with a near-record time of 14.16. Vollmer finished second to her friend and rival, whom she has never defeated in the event.
“I was so nervous,” Vollmer said. “I was shaking. I started telling myself, ‘I can do this. I’ve been here before.’ "
Vollmer and Selmon went head-to-head twice more during championship weekend. Vollmer came out on top in record-breaking fashion, in both events, and led the Hornets to the team championship by helping her team outscore North County Tech 77-43.
The Penney freshman blew by the field and bettered Audrey Bailey’s (Lathrop) 2004 record by breaking the tape in 44.08 in the 300 hurdles. Selmon finished second with a time of 44.57, nearly edging Bailey’s 44.56 clocking herself.
Vollmer and Selmon each broke the long jump record twice during the weekend’s competition. Vollmer had the final jump, however, and she inched by Selmon’s short-lived mark of 18-feet, 5 ¾ inches with a leap of 18-7 ¼.
Lexington’s Ameka Hannon set the old standard of 18-2 in 1982.
“We’re good friends before and after an event begins,” Vollmer said of Selmon. “But then I get to the point where I just want to beat her like anyone else. Once the event is over we’re back to being friends again.”
It’s not all about breaking records for Vollmer, however. She simply loves competition. She wants to beat the best.
“She is such a focused person,” her father and coach Mark Vollmer said. “It seems like the bigger the meet gets, she steps up and performs at an even higher level.”
Vollmer started breaking records long before she arrived at the state meet with expectations of winning three individual gold medals. The freshman has her name on six individual school records after just one season of competition at the
Hamilton school.
The three-sport star now sits atop the Hornet charts in the 100-meters, 200-meters, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the long jump. She was also part of the record-breaking 4x400 relay team.
Vollmer, who competes in the heptathlon during the summer AAU track and field circuit, was going to take a shot at the school’s 400-meter record during the 2008 season. But a hip flexor kept her out of the Cameron Invitational and assured the safety of the school’s quarter mile record for one more season.
Vollmer wasn’t the only
Missouri athlete to excel at the Show Me State’s small school division of the
Missouri prep track championships. Here are the individual and team standings from last weekend’s results. This weekend the state’s top male and female athletes from Classes 3 and 4 vie for state titles.
