Basketball Recap: Santa Cruz Valley Comes Up Short

Santa Cruz Valley was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They took a blow against the Veritas Prep Falcons, falling 63-27. The Dust Devils were not able to make up for their loss to the Falcons from their previous meeting back in February of 2021.

Despite the defeat, Santa Cruz Valley had strong showings from Zaryah Bursey, who posted 11 points, and Mionette Banda, who scored eight points. The dominant performance gave Banda a new career-high in points.

Veritas Prep's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Valeria Castaneda, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 rebounds. Castaneda continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Cate Schneider, who made all 7 shots she took for 15 points and four steals.

Santa Cruz Valley's loss dropped their record down to 3-12. As for Veritas Prep, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-11.

Santa Cruz Valley has already played their next game (against Miami), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Veritas Prep will challenge Santa Cruz Valley at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
