Basketball Recap: Southwest Edgecombe's Victory on Thursday Extends Winning Streak to Six

SouthWest Edgecombe entered their tilt with Ayden - Grifton on Thursday with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. They took down the Ayden - Grifton Chargers 72-57. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 97th, while the Chargers are ranked 312th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

SouthWest Edgecombe got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Zy Thigpen out in front who went 8 of 14 on his way to 21 points and eight assists. The contest was Thigpen's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Justin Bridgers, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 boards.

Thigpen wasn't the only one working in the assists department: SouthWest Edgecombe was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Loss or not, Ayden - Grifton got some senior leadership from Hatteras Jenkins and Jahmir Outlaw. Jenkins posted 21 points, while Outlaw put up 19 points. Another player making a difference was Nygel Morgan, who had nine points.

SouthWest Edgecombe's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-2. As for Ayden - Grifton, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-7.

SouthWest Edgecombe will square off against Washington at 7:30 p.m. on January 17th. Washington knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 15 games -- so hopefully SouthWest Edgecombe likes a good challenge. As for Ayden - Grifton, they will head out on the road to take on North Lenoir at 7:00 p.m. on January 17th.
