Basketball Recap: Smithfield Comes Up Short

Smithfield suffered their closest defeat since January 22, 2024 on Monday. They fell just short of the Bruton Panthers by a score of 70-67. The Packers were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Panthers earlier this season, when they won 80-78.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Bruton to victory, but perhaps none more so than Cy Gresham, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. What's more, Gresham also racked up five assists, the most he's had since back in December of 2024. Johnathan Hopkins was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Smithfield's loss dropped their record down to 17-3. As for Bruton, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season.

Looking ahead, Smithfield will be playing at home against New Kent at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. New Kent will roll in looking for their 21st straight win, something Smithfield surely won't give up without a fight. As for Bruton, they will venture away from home to take on Jamestown at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Bruton is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 61.7 points per game this season.
