Basketball Game Preview: Homestead Broncos vs. South Dade Buccaneers

Homestead and South Dade are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2020, but not for long. The Homestead Broncos will head out to face off against the South Dade Buccaneers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Homestead knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past six matchups -- so hopefully South Dade likes a good challenge.

Homestead will bounce into Friday's game after beating Somerset Academy South Homestead, who they had gone 0-3 against in their three prior meetings. Homestead blew past Somerset Academy South Homestead, posting an 88-36 win. Given the Broncos' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 275th, while the Hurricanes are ranked 754th), the result on Tuesday wasn't entirely unexpected.

Homestead got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Diego Canseco out in front who went 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 30 points. Those 30 points gave Canseco a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Andres Oropesa, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Homestead smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive boards in 42 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask South Dade). They really took it to Booker T. Washington for the full four quarters, racking up a 90-39 win. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 41-19.

Homestead is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a massive bump to their 11-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 75.8 points per game. As for South Dade, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-8.

Everything went Homestead's way against South Dade in their previous meeting back in December of 2024, as Homestead made off with a 61-41 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Homestead since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
