Delaware: Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game June 20

By Jon Buzby Jun 15, 2009, 12:00am

State's all-time leading scorer is girls lacrosse player of the year.

The state's annual Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game will be played Saturday, June 20, at Delaware Stadium on the University of Delaware campus. Pregame ceremonies begin at 6 p.m., followed by kickoff at 7 p.m.

The 54th edition of the annual tradition brings together the state’s top senior players for a great cause. Proceeds from the game benefit the Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens, an organization dedicated to raising funds and consciousness in support of programs that enrich the lives of Delawareans with intellectual disabilities.

Each senior participant is given the opportunity to take part in DFRC’s Hand-In-Hand Program. Since its start in 1974, this unique program pairs the senior participants with a "Buddy," a person 4-18 years old with an intellectual disability. The buddies build friendships and learn valuable lessons about diversity and acceptance. The Hand-In-Hand Program is the heart of the Blue-Gold experience.

Teams spend the week prior to the game on the University of Delaware campus practicing and participating in several activities revolving around the game. Each team will conduct an intra-squad scrimmage June 17 at 5:30 p.m. — the Blue Team at Tower Hill School in Wilmington and the Gold Team at Milford High School. Both scrimmages are open to the public and free of charge.

“I think the best thing about being involved is the people you meet,” says Patrick Weaver, chairperson of the 2009 game and a player in 1961. “The committee is made up of wonderful people with a passion for the purpose. The participants are very special young adults."

Girls Lacrosse: Schweizer named player of the year

St. Mark’s senior Courtney Schweizer added player of the year honors to her resume when the girls’ all-state lacrosse team was announced by the Delaware Interscholastic Girls Lacrosse Association of Coaches.

Schweizer, who is headed for Johns Hopkins in the fall, ended her career as the all-time leading scorer in Delaware with 329 goals.

“I had to defend her every day in practice,” said junior Lindsay Prettyman, an all-state first team selection herself. “I can tell you firsthand she’s the best player in the state.”
