With a playoff win on the line, Cardinal Newman rose to the challenge on Friday. They really took it to the St. Petersburg Catholic Barons for the full four quarters, racking up a 42-13 victory. The result was nothing new for the Crusaders, who have now won eight matchups by 21 points or more so far this season.

Jyron Hughley continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 158 yards and three TDs on only ten carries, while also throwing for 100 yards while completing 85.7% of his passes. Those three rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Janarro Sumpter was another key player, rushing for 91 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 11 carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Cardinal Newman was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 326 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 159 rushing yards in four consecutive contests.

Despite the loss, St. Petersburg Catholic still got an impressive performance from Chase Burrill, who threw for 230 yards and two TDs. A healthy portion of that aerial production (85 yards to be exact) went to Yorel Stewart.

Cardinal Newman has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 11.8 points on average over those games. Having lost for the first time this season, St. Petersburg Catholic fell to 12-1.

Cardinal Newman has already played their next matchup, a 48-33 victory against Carrollwood Day on the 5th. St. Petersburg Catholic does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
