Basketball Recap: Vanguard Takes a Loss

Vanguard was the 67-49 winner over Wekiva when they last played one another back in January of 2019, but their luck changed this time around. The Vanguard Panthers took a 60-46 bruising from the Wekiva Mustangs on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Panthers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 498th, while the Mustangs are ranked 245th).

When it comes to explaining why Vanguard lost, don't look at Turral Berry. Despite the final result, he posted 24 points and five steals. The contest was Berry's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jakhai Ford, who had eight points in addition to six assists and three steals.

Eric Nichols was the offensive standout of the game as he went 6 of 10 on his way to 16 points. Another player making a difference was Louvens Saint-Pierre, who scored 11 points and three steals.

This is the second loss in a row for Vanguard and nudges their season record down to 6-10. As for Wekiva, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 8-11.

Vanguard has already played their next match, an 82-71 victory against New Dimensions on the 21st. As for Wekiva, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 55-29 win against International Sports Academy on the 20th.
