Softball Recap: Russell County Comes Up Short

Russell County blew Campbellsville out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Tuesday Campbellsville got their revenge. The Russell County Lakers fell just short of the Campbellsville Eagles by a score of 11-9. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Lakers have suffered since April 16, 2024.

Brylie Hardwick was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single earned run any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.

In other batting news, Rylen McGowan was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Addy Abrell, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Even though they lost, Russell County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits every time they've taken the field this season.

Having lost for the first time this season, Russell County fell to 2-1. As for Campbellsville, they now also have a winning record of 2-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Russell County will challenge Rockcastle County at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Russell County is facing Rockcastle County at the right time seeing as Rockcastle County is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Campbellsville, they will welcome Bethlehem at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Bethlehem will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Campbellsville surely won't give up without a fight.
