Cosumnes Oaks is 6-1 against Laguna Creek since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Wolfpack are taking a road trip to challenge the Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Cosumnes Oaks gave up the first runs last Friday, but they didn't let that get them down. They won by a run and slipped past Franklin 5-4. That's two games straight that the Wolfpack have won by just one run.
Amyah Avila made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Onna Swanigan, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Mya Wilson, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Cosumnes Oaks hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Laguna Creek ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They had just enough and edged out Pleasant Grove 5-4. The win was some much needed relief for the Cardinals as it spelled an end to their seven-game losing streak.
Nikiya Jumpingbull spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits and racked up six Ks. Those six strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.
At the plate, Jazmine Johnson was excellent, scoring a run while going 1-for-3. Aundrea Jackson was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
Laguna Creek's victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-5 and their overall record up to 6-8. As for Cosumnes Oaks, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Cosumnes Oaks beat Laguna Creek 4-1 in their previous meeting back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolfpack since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
