Baseball Game Preview: Woodruff Wolverines vs. Blacksburg Wildcats

Woodruff is a perfect 3-0 against Blacksburg since February of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Woodruff Wolverines will host the Blacksburg Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Woodruff had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the six-run drubbing they dealt Fox Creek on Tuesday. Woodruff was the clear victors by a 10-4 margin over Fox Creek.

Meanwhile, Blacksburg had to endure a six-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Greenville Tech Charter a 23-0 shutout on Tuesday. The Wildcats' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Matty Cody made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out eight batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Blacksburg got a massive performance out of Brayden Hughey, who went 2-for-3 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Christian Federico, who scored four runs and stole Four bases. while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Blacksburg was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April of 2024.

Blacksburg's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-5. As for Woodruff, the win got them back to even at 3-3.

Woodruff was able to grind out a solid victory over Blacksburg when the teams last played back in April of 2023, winning 8-3. Will Woodruff repeat their success, or does Blacksburg have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
