Football Recap: Christ the King Triumphs Behind Punishing Ground Game

With a playoff win on the line, Christ the King rose to the challenge on Saturday. They enjoyed a cozy 32-13 win over the Kennedy Catholic Gaels. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 40-37 back in October.

Isaiah Smith produced another solid effort rushing for 271 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.3 yards per carry. Those 271 rushing yards gave him a new career-high.

Smith was just one part of a punishing run game: Christ the King was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 344 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Christ the King's defense and their five sacks. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Eric Samuels and Kelvin Regis, who each picked up 1.5 sacks apiece. Smith got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Although Kennedy Catholic took the loss, they still got scores from James Malone and Dominic Rubino.

Christ the King's record now sits at 6-4. As for Kennedy Catholic, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season.

Christ the King will head out to take on Holy Cross at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Knights will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Royals surely won't give up without a fight. Kennedy Catholic does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
