Softball Game Preview: Sumner Tigers vs. Washington Academy Raiders

The Sumner Tigers will take on the Washington Academy Raiders at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Sumner is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Everything went their way against Searsport on Friday as they made off with a 33-8 victory. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Tigers as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.

Meanwhile, Washington Academy came tearing into Thursday's match with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 7-6 W against the Red Devils.

Bella Cirone made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Grace Dennison, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one stolen base and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Lily Hennessey, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Washington Academy pushed their record up to 6-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Sumner, their victory bumped their record up to 4-5.
