Softball Game Preview: Harlandale Indians vs. Southside Cardinals

Harlandale and Southside are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2018, but likely not for long. The Harlandale Indians will be playing at home against the Southside Cardinals at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Harlandale has given up an average of 6.6 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.

Having struggled with four losses in a row, Harlandale turned things around against Jay on Wednesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Mustangs 14-13. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Indians' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

Eliana Rae DeLeon was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Sofia Galvan, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.

Meanwhile, Southside lost 7-1 to MacArthur on Monday. The Cardinals have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Southside also got a good showing from Destiny Rodriguez, who didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Rodriguez has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Southside saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jozelyn Wilson, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Southside's defeat dropped their record down to 9-5. As for Harlandale, their win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-5 and their overall record up to 7-7.

Harlandale beat Southside 8-5 in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Does Harlandale have another victory up their sleeve, or will Southside turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
