Basketball Recap: Newton Proves Higher State Rank Is No Mistake

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Newton had no problem doing just that on Tuesday. They came out on top against the Collins Tigers by a score of 64-51. Given Newton's advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 87th, while Collins is ranked 239th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Newton has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.5 points over those games. As for Collins, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matches, which has put a noticeable dent in their 8-16 record this season.

As of now, neither Newton nor Collins have any future games scheduled.
