Baseball Game Preview: University Liggett Knights vs. Athens Red Hawks

The University Liggett Knights will take on the Athens Red Hawks at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

University Liggett is returning to their home field after beating West Bloomfield on theirs, despite the fact West Bloomfield has dominated at home this season. The Knights came out on top against the Lakers by a score of 7-4 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Athens owes their pitching crew a big pat on the back after their performance on Tuesday. They walked away with a 4-0 victory over Stoney Creek. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Red Hawks.

The result came thanks to Derek Smith's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Oliver Holmes was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Andrew Cermak was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one double.

Athens hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Stoney Creek struck out eight times.

University Liggett's win bumped their record up to 16-11-2. As for Athens, their victory bumped their record up to 6-11.

University Liggett beat Athens 5-0 when the teams last played back in April of 2016. Will the Knights repeat their success, or do the Red Hawks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
