The West Point Pointers will head out on the road to square off against the Mathews Blue Devils at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
As a matter of fact, West Point put up the most runs they have all season on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 17-2 margin over King & Queen Central. The Pointers not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 8, 2024 (when they won 22-2).
Johnny Sparks was a major factor no matter where he played. He pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit any time he's pitched this season. He was even better at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kekoah Ferguson, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Blake Keefe, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
West Point always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .583. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Mathews got the win against Northampton on Wednesday by a conclusive 12-6. The result was nothing new for the Blue Devils, who have now won three games by six runs or more so far this season.
Like West Point, Mathews also got a great game from a two-way player: Christian Blue. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. Blue was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and three RBI.
In other batting news, Blake Hunley was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in May of 2024. Hunter Horsley was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
Mathews has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 4-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. West Point's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-8.
West Point might still be hurting after the 11-2 defeat they got from Mathews in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Pointers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
