The Point Loma Pointers will face off against the Coronado Islanders at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Point Loma is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Point Loma's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Tuesday's struggle, when Cathedral Catholic hitters got past them. The Pointers lost 13-4 to the Dons on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Pointers have suffered since March 10th.
Ella Poulin put in work while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Poulin was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.
Poulin wasn't the only one making solid contact as seven players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Annika Isaacson, who went 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another was Leyton MacPherson, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base and one RBI.
The home team had won the previous three meetings between Coronado and Morse, and Coronado kept the tradition alive. The Islanders put the hurt on the Tigers with a sharp 15-4 win on Friday. Considering the Islanders have won six games by more than seven runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Point Loma, Coronado also got a great game from a two-way player: Ali Pecus. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Pecus has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jersey Cunningham, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, four runs, and three RBI. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Parker Thompson was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
Coronado was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .452. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Coronado's victory was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-9. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Point Loma, their loss ended a seven-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-4-1.
Saturday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Point Loma hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .333. However, it's not like Coronado struggles in that department as they've averaged .340. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Point Loma was able to grind out a solid victory over Coronado when the teams last played back in March of 2024, winning 3-0. Do the Pointers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Islanders turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
