MaxPreps Top 25 Texas high school football rankings

By Randy Jennings Sep 9, 2019, 1:00pm

No. 1 Duncanville host St. John's (Washington D.C.) with rare chance to measure talent level with a national out-of-state power.

Duncanville convincingly passed its first week as the No. 1 team in the MaxPreps Texas Top 25 ranking, but a difficult Week 3 challenge awaits.

South Oak Cliff (Dallas) proved to be no match in Duncanville's home opener on Friday as the Panthers roared to a 59-3 triumph. In its 2-0 start, Duncanville has yet to allow a touchdown.

Saturday, however, Duncanville will face an elite program well-tested in facing nationwide competition when Washington D.C. private school St. John's visits Panther Stadium for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

St. John's (2-1) opened the season with two home wins over Florida schools and last week lost 34-30 to St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia). The Cadets schedule calls for games in Florida and California after the Texas trip.

Duncanville quarterback Ja'Quinden Jackson, a Texas Longhorns pledge, has thrown for 267 yards and three touchdowns, but so far is without the big rushing numbers of 2018 when he led the Panthers to the Class 6A-D1 state title game.

This week three newcomers off to 2-0 starts crack the top 25, Vandegrift (Austin), Pearland and Klein Collins (Spring).

Ranking by classification
Texas 6A

1. Duncanville (2-0)
2. Katy (2-0)
3. North Shore (Houston) (1-1)
4. Allen (2-0)
5. Longview (2-0)
6. Carroll (Southlake) (2-0)
7. Guyer (Denton) (2-0)
8. Westlake (Austin) (2-0)
9. Rockwall (1-1)
10. West Brook (Beaumont) (2-0)

West Brook (Beaumont), a 40-point winner over Strake Jesuit (Houston) is the only newcomer to the top 10 this week. Guyer (Denton) was involved in the only tight finish on Week 2 for the top 10, coming from behind in the fourth quarter to edge Cedar Hill 40-36. The top three, Duncanville, Katy and North Shore (Houston) coasted to wins.

Texas 5A-1
1. Highland Park (Dallas) (2-0)
2. Ryan (Denton) (2-0)
3. Shadow Creek (Pearland) (2-0)
4. Lone Star (Frisco) (2-0)
5. Lufkin (1-1)

Highland Park (Dallas) extended its state-best winning streak to 33 games with a 52-25 road victory over Class 6A Horn (Mesquite). The last defeat for the Scots game in the 2017 season-opener. Highland Park is attempting to win its fourth consecutive state crown. The other four ranked teams pitched shutouts in Week 2.

Texas 5A-2
1. Aledo (1-1)
2. FB Marshall (Missouri City) (2-0)
3. Calallen (Corpus Christi (2-0)
4. Huntsville (2-0)
5. Manvel (2-0)

Compared to the teams in Class 5A-D1, it was a pedestrian week of scoring for the top teams in 5A-2, with Aledo being the exception. But on the other hand, the defenses in this division did not allow many points, either. Aledo and Fort Bend Marshall blanked their opponent.

Texas 4A-1
1. Argyle (2-0)
2. Carthage (2-0)
3. Sealy (2-0)
3. Decatur (2-0)
5. La Vega (Waco) (1-1)

Argyle changed the landscape with a 14-point victory over 2018 state champion La Vega. Based on that victory, Argyle climbed from No. 3 to No. 1 with Carthage remaining a very strong No. 2. Sealy and Decatur join the mix this week.

Texas 4A-2
1. Pleasant Grove (Texarkana) (Texarkana) (2-0)
2. West Orange-Stark (Orange) (2-0)
3. Jasper  (1-0)
4. Gilmer (2-0)
5. Connally (Waco) (2-0)

Top-ranked Pleasant Grove (Texarkana) should get a test on Friday when Atlanta comes calling. No. 2 West Orange-Stark (Orange) likewise has a salty opponent Newton, No. 1 in Class 3A-D2. Connolly (Waco) joins the top five this week.

Texas 3A-1
1. Grandview (2-0)
2. Malakoff (2-0)
3. C.H. Yoe (Cameron) (2-0)
4. Wall (2-0)
5. East Chambers (Winnie) (2-0)

Grandview's winning streak is at 13 as its hosts rival Venus on Friday. The following Friday, Grandview goes on the road to meet No. 2 Malakoff. Gladewater bows out after a loss to Atlanta, opening the No. 4 spot for Wall.

Texas 3A-2
1. Newton (2-0)
2. Canadian (2-0)
3. East Bernard (2-0)
4. Abernathy (2-0)
5. Crane (2-0)

Just two games into the season three Newton running backs, Trinis Wash, Kevin Watson Jr. and DeAnthony Gatson have recorded individual 100-yard rushing games. With Gunter and Cisco losing in Week 2, Abernathy and Crane debut in the ranking this week.

Texas 2A-1
1. Refugio (2-0)
2. San Saba (2-0)
3. Shiner (2-0)
4. San Augustine (2-0)
5. New Deal (2-0)

No change this week with all five securing Week 2 victories. No. 1 Refugio appears to be going back to more pass-heavy play-calling. Austin Ochoa, the 6-2, 205-pound senior quarterback, completed 20-29 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-6 win over Goliad.

Texas 2A-2
1. Hamlin (2-0)
2. Grapeland (2-0)
3. Wellington (2-0)
4. Albany (2-0)
5. Gruver (2-0)

A shakeup at the top after No. 1 Mart and No. 2 Falls City stumbled. Hamlin moves to the top spot while Albany and Gruver are new additions to the top five.

TAPPS
1. Bishop Dunne (Dallas) (2-0)
2. Parish Episcopal (Dallas) (1-0)
3. Trinity Christian (Cedar Hill) (1-1)
4. Antonian Prep (San Antonio) 2-0
5. Nolan Catholic (Fort Worth) 2-0

Parish Episcopal in its season opener rallied from a 13-0 halftime deficit to snap the 24-game winning streak of Trinity Christian (Cedar Hill) 33-27 in overtime. With the victory, Parish Episcopal leaps to No. 2 behind Bishop Dunne which faces DeSoto on Saturday.
