Softball Game Preview: Burkeville Mustangs vs. Chester Yellowjackets

Burkeville hasn't had much luck against Chester recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Mustangs will head out on the road to square off against the Yellowjackets at 3:00 p.m. Burkeville has given up an average of 16 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Burkeville is headed into Thursday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 20th straight game dating back to last season on Tuesday. They lost 16-0 to Zavalla.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Chester). They put the hurt on Zavalla with a sharp 22-4 victory last Tuesday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Yellowjackets needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.

Lauren Cintrano was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two triples, three runs, and three RBI. Those two triples gave her a new career-high. Carlen Sluga was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

Chester was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .533. They are 5-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Chester's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-6. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Burkeville, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.

Burkeville might still be hurting after the 20-0 defeat they got from Chester when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
